To All the Wantrepreneurs Who Think They Can’t: YES, YOU CAN

Yes, you can.

You may think you can’t, you may talk yourself out of believing, you may listen to the doubters, but you can. It won’t be easy. Anyone who promises you otherwise is selling something you don’t want to buy. Chances are you’re going to have to work for it, but you can.

You are capable.

How do I know this? How can I tell you that you have it in you? Because you’ve done harder things because you had to. What your harder thing is is as individual as you are. But they’ve laid the foundation for the mental toughness that is required to create something from nothing.

I cannot count the times I have sat across from a Would-Be Entrepreneur who would love to start their own business and had some version of this conversation. It usually starts with the excited description of the business and how this has been a dream of theirs for a long time. Then comes the roadblock. The “I’d love to, but I can’t.”

They say, “I would love to start a business, to sell my such and such or to work for myself instead of for a giant corporation, BUT…” And then come the list of excuses. “I don’t know how”, “I can’t afford to be without a salary”, “No one will hire me because I don’t have enough experience”, and on and on.

Here is one universal truth about every entrepreneur: no one ever started in business knowing everything. They had to learn, they had to hire help, they had to ask their peers for advice. Sometimes, that lack of knowledge causes the newbie entrepreneur to fail at something they tried in their new business.

They launch a new e-learning webinar that bombs, they price their first proposal too high and lose the business, they offer the product in a color they think people will love and it doesn’t sell. This is why we build into our new business protection mechanisms to prevent this mistakes from costing us everything.

The webinar? Probably cost you some wasted time and effort (and maybe a little bit of pride). The proposal? Well, you can probably negotiate a different arrangement or chalk it up to a lesson-learned and win the business the next time. The product? Don’t order too much and have a blow-out sale to clear the inventory and move on.

The point is that you can. Yes, it will be a learning journey. No, you won’t do everything right from the start. Yes, you will get multiple chances to figure it out as long as you start small and build toward your ultimate goal and learn from your mistakes along the way.

That’s why, dear Wantrapreneur, MOMeo Magazine started all those years ago. I was tired of sitting across the table from moms just like you who were telling me how much they wanted to start something, but they couldn’t. MOMeo Magazine exists to help you on your journey to start a business.

Our experts have done the same before you (myself included, multiple times now) and they are here to share their wisdom and advice so if you have a question or something you would like featured in the magazine, tweet me @CarlaYoung on Twitter or connect with us on Facebook!
